Knit beanie made of 100% acrylic featuring an embroidered white star, inspired by WWII Allied vehicle markings. Part of the Fostex Garments WWII series.
During WWII, white stars were widely used as identification markings on Allied vehicles, especially before campaigns like Operation Husky (1943, Sicily) and Operation Overlord (1944, Normandy). In the chaos of battle, however, these stars could sometimes be mistaken for German crosses at distances beyond 1000 yards. To prevent friendly fire — particularly from Allied aircraft (the 9th USAAF was nicknamed the “American Luftwaffe” by ground troops) — tank crews often painted over the stars or surrounded them with aircraft recognition circles, which could be solid or broken into 4, 5, or even 8 segments.
Although official manuals such as US Army AR 850-5 (1942) defined the standards, in reality, markings were often improvised, passed down by memos or field orders and interpreted by soldiers on the ground. The white star became a symbol of both recognition and adaptation in wartime conditions.
