Beanie Allied Star – Black, Fostex Garments

Warm acrylic knit beanie with embroidered white star, referencing the markings used by Allied vehicles during World War II. Part of the historical WWII collection by Fostex Garments.

During WWII, the white star was widely used for vehicle identification, especially before campaigns like Operation Husky (Sicily 1943) and Operation Overlord (Normandy 1944). In the chaos of battle, however, it could be mistaken for a German cross at ranges over 1000 yards. To avoid friendly fire — particularly from Allied aircraft (the 9th USAAF was nicknamed the "American Luftwaffe") — tank crews sometimes painted out the stars or added recognition circles, either continuous or broken into 4, 5, or even 8 segments.

While official manuals like US Army AR 850-5 (1942) outlined guidelines, in practice markings were often improvised based on field orders and local interpretation. The white star thus became both a symbol of recognition and battlefield adaptation.
