Warm knit beanie made of 100% acrylic with embroidered white star – a historical reference to the Allied forces' markings during World War II. Part of the WWII collection by Fostex Garments, ideal for cold weather and military history enthusiasts.
During WWII, the white star was a key identification symbol used on Allied vehicles, particularly before Operation Husky (Sicily 1943) and Operation Overlord (Normandy 1944). However, from distances over 1000 yards, the star could be mistaken for the German cross. To reduce friendly fire – especially from Allied air units (the 9th USAAF was jokingly nicknamed the “American Luftwaffe” by ground troops) – crews often painted out the stars or surrounded them with recognition circles, either complete or segmented into 4, 5, or even 8 parts.
Although official regulations like US Army AR 850-5 (1942) existed, in reality, vehicle markings were frequently improvised based on field orders and local interpretation. The white star thus became not only a symbol of identification, but also of survival and battlefield adaptation.
